Abstract
The present dissertation is aimed to carry out a study about the rural architecture in Vale do Sousa, with particular attention to the case of the municipality of Penafiel, as a way of residing, building and living the space. There is an attempt to understand whether it is possible and viable to safeguard the architectural and cultural heritage, keeping the physical authenticity of the rural habitations in this context. Societies and the territory are going through a great restructuring at a global level, which makes it impossible to understand the geographical space and vernacular architecture according to traditional parameters. Vale do Sousa is a diversified territory, where population spread between plains and irregular valleys; this dissemination of people is increasingly seen due to the intensification of the processes of demographic transformation and urbanization, to the introduction of the machine in people's daily life and capitalist relations in the fields and to the integration of Portugal in European Union. Consequently, it is impossible nowadays to distinguish what is 'town' or 'field'. After the approach of the listed processes, the present dissertation analyses the process of rural housing recovery and focuses on methods of incorporation of new organization strategies on the house structure. The changes and the organization of these processes provide a more reasoned and structured characterization about reality.
