Abstract

This dissertation is a product of the spell and grief of reading Borges. Borges's works, at the aesthetic level, build ludic labyrinths, trappers and killers with all their possible objects; At the metaphysical level, his works revolve, without exception, around the pattern of oppositions and the infinite. Hence the impossibility of his labyrinth and his playful-pessimistic worldview. In the Borgean world, there is no Truth, nor the sense of existence, nor human initiative; Death is the only way out/solution of that labyrinth, of the oppositions/bifurcations/inversions and of the irresolvable infinite. Given the author's belief that death/infinity cannot be the only solution to the Borgean labyrinth, the dissertation explores new and constructive possibilities for that labyrinth.

The first chapter examines how the stylistic labyrinth manifests itself in the works of Borges and how it is associated with the metaphysical labyrinth; The second chapter is dedicated to Borges' worldview to elaborate the labyrinthine characteristic in his thought: his closed speech, his playful fatalism and his passive Weltanschauung; the third chapter places Borges in the western context to present the problem of both logocentrism and deconstructionism--the Borgean problem; while the fourth chapter places the Argentine in the oriental context (the precepts extracted from Taoism and Buddhism) exploring positive exits from his labyrinth through the comparison of Manichaeism with dualism, the resigned worldview with the anthropocentric one, and Borgean intellectualism with spiritual transcendentalism.

The result of this study should be a synthesis of the author's direct knowledge of the cultures, literatures, and philosophies of the Western world and the Eastern world; it must be a study of the metaphysical foundations of Borges's literature; it must be a "spellbreaker" of the Borges; and above all, it must be a challenge for Borges' labyrinth, an existential and spiritual challenge.
