Abstract (summary)

The need for image data compression for various digital image processing applications has increased rapidly in the last decade. In this paper we will review different data compression techniques, with emphasis on the transform coding methods. Also, we will include a step by step description of an implementation of one technique, based on the Discrete Cosine Transform. The compression ratio achieved using this technique is 8 to 1, with a very good subjective image quality.
