Abstract

The impact of education in the creation of a French-speaking and Catholic community in Hearst is the subject of this thesis. For this, she is particularly interested in the arrival and settlement of French Canadians in this region of northern Ontario. Initially motivated by economic considerations, these migrants are supported and accompanied by the Catholic clergy. The latter thus intends to promote the rooting of the French language and culture as well as the Catholic religion in this corner of the country. The linguistic and educational crisis which shook Ontario during the first decades of the 20th century also stimulated the nationalist ardor of the clerics. In this context, the establishment and operation of a French-speaking Catholic school takes on both symbolic and real importance. This is why, at the cost of incessant efforts, they will draw both financial and human resources from their native province, as evidenced by the arrival of the Sisters of Notre-Dame du Perpetuel Secours of Saint-Damien de Bellechasse. Their presence and their work will enable the running of not only a boarding school-orphanage but also that of the village school.
