Abstract (summary)

For permanent 103Pd prostate implants, we studied the effect of migration of radioactive sources on the dose coverage (in percentage) of the target area (the prostate). For different volumes and shapes of prostates, we first constructed optimized treatment plans and from these we simulated source migration using a realistic Monte Carlo simulations program. Note that the drop in dose coverage after simulation of the migration is mainly dependent on the interaction between the source activity used and the energy of the gammas emitted by the 103Pd. This drop in dose coverage is maximum for intermediate activities of 1.35–1.40 mCi and minimum for low activities of 1.00 mCi. It is advantageous to use 1.00 mCi sources because the plans are robust to migration, in addition to preserving organs at risk.
