Abstract

This thesis is a research study of the claims and discourse of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and transsexual activism in Puerto Rico during the Pride Parade political rally held in San Juan, Puerto Rico on June 4, 2006. It is an exploration of sexuality as a construct of the power relationships established by the heteronormal order and as political arena for groups from the above forbidden sexualities who are demanding their rights. Discourse analysis is used as the means and basis to interpret, from the standpoint of language, the system of meaning that organizes and articulates the subjectivity and the social practices of the subject of study. To this end, we analyzed and interpreted visual images obtained during the 2006 Pride Parade. These interpretations have been framed within three fundamental themes: (1) visibility, affirmation, and homophobia; (2) gender subversion and transgression; (3) assertion of rights and demand for recognition, and inclusion. Finally, this research study acknowledges the configuration of a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and transsexual policy in Puerto Rico whose advocates are asserting and demanding their constitutional, civil, and human rights through the discourse of a liberal and democratic citizenship.
