Abstract
This thesis presents a general overview of the vibrant history and origins of a large wind ensemble known as the symphonic band and presents three original compositions written to exemplify the various ideologies of traditional and contemporary compositional practices. The Examination of this history is divided into three essential stages of development of which leads the symphonic band to evolve into its present day form. In chapter one, the study begins by examining the origins of the performing musician and wind ensemble tradition prior to the 13th century, and its application within military and social traditions. The second stage of the symphonic bands development, found in chapter 2, is recognized by increase of instrument creations, modifications, and enhancements. The addition of new key systems, valves, and new creations like the saxophone greatly improved the overall sound, range, timbres, and technical performance of the instruments of the time. The final stage in the symphonic bands development occurred in the 19th and 20 th century where individuals like Frederick Fennell stimulated the growth of band repertoire and performance practices. In conclusion, three original works for symphonic band were created and are fully analyzed in chapter 4. Each work is fully analyzed and compared to the modern day compositional styles. It is the intention that "The Pursuit of Mountains", "Timeless Moments", and "Middle Kingdom" becomes part of the continued development of the symphonic band into the future, further challenging the bands performance abilities and style.
