Abstract

The objective of this study is to demonstrate that lean techniques can be used by the service industry to cope with fluctuating demand in a competitive market. By developing an inventory control system that links with customer demand, this study uses lean techniques (visual kanban) to reduce inventory cost. This study also identifies some of the key components of Lean and develops guidelines on how service industries can convert their daily operations into Lean-based operations.

Many common characteristics that can be identified are essential when introducing lean manufacturing into an organization in the service industry. During this study all of the characteristics which were used to implement a major change in program, such as introducing lean techniques, are discussed.

Application of 6S and a visual kanban system on a department store photo processing lab product line resulted in a better understanding of how the supplies flow through the system. This project is the first step in helping the corporation eliminate waste, increase productivity, improve safety and reduce cost. Recommendations are made on how to implement lean-based operations in the service industry to improve operations.
