Abstract

The document is an introduction to the musical world of Jean-Louis Florentz (1947-2004), a French composer who left a relatively small body of works and has his own distinct style. In the first chapter, biographical information and important stylistic traits are described. The organ work, Laudes, Op. 5 is then discussed in terms of texture and form as well as challenges in performing the work. The second chapter offers the first English description of crucial elements of Jean-Louis Florentz's harmonic language, based on his own treatise. The third chapter attempts to use Florentz's methodology in analyzing two specific movements of Laudes. Problems and solutions are discussed with analysis in the manner of Florentz. The conclusion points the reader to Florentz's own analysis of some of his works as well as other topics possible for further research.
