Abstract

Students interested in biomedical instrumentation and the signal processing of biomedical signals are sometimes at a disadvantage compared to a traditional electrical engineering student. They often have not had as many courses or as rigorous a treatment of many of the foundational topics important to instrumentation and signal processing. To help rectify this situation, a new two course sequence was created where laboratory was an integral part of each course. Each laboratory uses virtual instrument technology; a new wave in the engineering education community. LabVIEW, MATLAB, and an educational laboratory virtual instrument suite were used to demonstrate the necessary concepts required in the biomedical engineering courses. This thesis describes the creation of each biomedical engineering laboratory and provides feedback as to how well they performed.
