Ce mémoire s’intéresse à l’imaginaire du mal-être qui pèse sur le sujet-personnage dans le roman Les Heures de Michael Cunningham, paru en 1999. Plus précisément, il cherche à en dégager la poétique, les illustrations, les mécanismes et les causes chez trois personnages féminins.

Le premier chapitre est consacré à la représentation de la parole et de la pensée. Nous y explorons le caractère inadéquat ou incomplet des interactions entre les personnages. Cette partie aborde les questions d’indicible, de contenu implicite, de flux de pensée et d’équilibre des rapports conversationnels.

Le deuxième chapitre est consacré aux rôles sociaux et à la notion féministe d’agentivité. Il aborde l’importance de l’assujettissement dans le mal-être des personnages. La répétition d’un quotidien futile représente alors le processus d’assujettissement et le désir homosexuel en représente la subversion. Il s’agit de mettre en lumière les liens entre la condition de femme et le mal-être.

Le troisième chapitre montre que la mise en scène de la temporalité est en fait un effort d’investigation du mal-être. En effet, la nostalgie et l’appréhension créent un état qui constitue un dispositif d’effacement du présent. Les personnages, dans leurs rapports au futur et au passé, peuvent être doublement mis en relation avec la temporalité par la configuration narratologique de celle-ci, mais aussi par le discours la concernant.

This thesis is interested in the imagination of the uneasiness which weighs on the subject-character in the novel The Hours by Michael Cunningham, published in 1999. More precisely, it seeks to identify the poetics, the illustrations, the mechanisms and the causes in three female characters.

The first chapter is devoted to the representation of speech and thought. We explore the inadequate or incomplete character of the interactions between the characters. This part addresses the questions of the unspeakable, implicit content, flow of thought and balance of conversational relationships.

The second chapter is devoted to social roles and the feminist notion of agency. It addresses the importance of subjugation in the characters’ discomfort. The repetition of a futile daily life then represents the process of subjugation and homosexual desire represents its subversion. The aim is to highlight the links between the status of women and ill-being.

The third chapter shows that the staging of temporality is in fact an effort to investigate unease. Indeed, nostalgia and apprehension create a state which constitutes a device for erasing the present. The characters, in their relationships to the future and the past, can be doubly related to temporality by the narratological configuration of the latter, but also by the discourse concerning it.
