Chichén Itzá is inspired by the Mayan ruins in Chichén Itzá located in the heart of the Yucatan peninsula. The work is divided into three separate movements. Each movement is influenced by different aspects of the Mayan culture. The first movement, Kukulkan , is a musical representation of the numerical relationships between the Mayan calendar and the architecture of the main pyramid known as Kukulkan. The second movement, El Juego de la Muerte, takes its influence from the ball game ritual. The piece shows the movement of the ball through the constant change of meters, registers and timbers. The last movement, El Cenote Sagrado, is a programmatic piece depicting the sacred well ritual. The Maya believed that during the times of drought a sacrifice to the gods was necessary. Chaac, the god of rain, required a virgin bride to be sacrificed in exchange for rain.
