El papiro BGU 4.1024, pp. 6-8, entre realidad y ficción: una (re)valoración de su uso como fuente histórica

Abstract

El papiro BGU 4.1024, pp. 6-8 (mediados del s. IV d.C.) contiene el registro de un proceso judicial en el que un hombre es acusado y condenado por haber matado a una prostituta en Alejandría. El texto del papiro, dados los acontecimientos que en él se narran, resulta ser de gran interés histórico para conocer el trasfondo político y social de la época y el lugar en el que fue puesto por escrito. No obstante, prácticamente desde el momento de su publicación han surgido dudas respecto a su autenticidad, ya que parece contener altas dosis de ficción literaria. En este artículo se hace un repaso crítico a las distintas teorías acerca de su autenticidad y se propone una nueva interpretación a este respecto basada en las características internas del propio texto y su vinculación con el ambiente literario de la época.

The papyrus BGU 4.1024, pp. 6-8 (mid 4th century AD) contains the record of a criminal trial in which a man is accused and convicted of killing a prostitute in Alexandria. The papyrus’s text has a great historical interest in order to show the political and social background of the time and the place where it was written. However, doubts have arisen regarding its authenticity practically from the moment of its publication, since it seems to contain high doses of literary fiction. In this article a critical review of the different theories about its authenticity is made and, in addition, a new interpretation is proposed in this regard based on the internal characteristics of the text itself and its link with the literary environment of the time.
