Le mythe Iroquois de “La femme tombée du ciel”: Un récit de création du monde, un modèle pour la société, un reflet de l'esprit

Plusieurs questions se sont posées lorsque nous avons commencé à nous intéresser au mythe iroquois de Lafemme tombée du ciel. Comment définir ce mythe? À quoi sert-il? Que révèle-t-il? Le mythe permet-il de comprendre la structure organisationnelle de la société iroquoise? Ou encore, la réalité sociale aide-t-elle à mieux saisir l'univers symbolique du mythe? En fait, ce mémoire se veut une étude exploratoire des définitions, des fonctions et des interprétations possibles du mythe. En recourant à trois approches théoriques en sciences humaines et sociales, nous nous sommes demandée, avec la perspective évolutionniste, si le mythe de La femme tombée du ciel peut être compris comme un récit de création, avec la perspective fonctionnaliste, s'il peut être un modèle pour la société et, enfin, avec la perspective structuraliste, s'il est un reflet de l'esprit humain. Ou peut-il être tout cela? C'est ainsi que nous en arrivons à percevoir toute la richesse et la complexité de ce mythe porteur de multiples significations.

Several questions arose when we began to become interested in the Iroquois myth of The Woman Fallen from the Sky. How to define this myth? What is it used for? What does it reveal? Does the myth help us understand the organizational structure of Iroquois society? Or again, does social reality help to better understand the symbolic universe of the myth? In fact, this dissertation is intended to be an exploratory study of the definitions, functions and possible interpretations of the myth. Using three theoretical approaches in human and social sciences, we asked ourselves, with the evolutionary perspective, if the myth of The woman who fell from the sky can be understood as a creation story, with the functionalist perspective, if it can be a model for society and, finally, with the structuralist perspective, if it is a reflection of the human spirit. Or can it be all of these? This is how we come to perceive all the richness and complexity of this myth carrying multiple meanings.
