Júlio Dinis - Representações Romanescas do Corpo Psicológico e Social : Influência e Interferência da Literatura Inglesa

Abstract

Esta Tese de Doutoramento pretende aclarar alguns aspectos da obra do escritor Júlio Dinis bem como introduzir algumas inflexões analíticas que, até ao momento, não se encontram no escopo crítico literário. Faz-se um levantamento de alguns posicionamentos narrativos, criticamente observados no âmbito da literatura portuguesa, e procura-se renovar a imagem das relações literárias estabelecidas com alguns escritores portugueses. No âmbito comparatista, dado que nos romances de Júlio Dinis se estabelece uma inquestionável ligação às literaturas inglesa e irlandesa (de notar que o escritor era filho de mãe inglesa e neto de avós inglês e irlandesa), decorrendo das temáticas comummente trabalhadas são chamados a este os escritores Laurence Sterne, Oliver Goldsmith, Henry Fielding, Jane Austen e Charles Dickens.

O inovador tratamento psicológico atribuído por Júlio Dinis ao sujeito e à sociedade naliteratura do século XIX português aprofunda claramente as raízes na tradição literária inglesa doséculo XVIII. Este tratamento esforça-se por aproximar as classes sociais a partir das relaçõesindividuais e, lutando pela ordem e justiça que integra um quadro de valores morais, torna-semanifesto o esboço da utopia social. Os recursos da influência literária inglesa no trabalhodinisiano são vários. Observemos alguns: a pintura é utilizada como processo intersemiótico deincentivo à auto-estima do leitor; a perspectiva judicativa, quer aplicada pelo sujeito, quer pelasociedade, expõe-se como o indesejável constrangimento que só a metamorfose psicológicaconsegue ultrapassar; a mundivisão do teatro na vida, e da vida no teatro, promotora dopermanente esforço de utilização da máscara; invoca-se a androginia que, aplicada àspersonagens femininas, pretende claramente conferir especiais atributos à mulher; o corpo e acasa como linguagem do pensamento; defende-se um progresso civilizacional que respeite osdireitos humanos, e a identidade nacional é ainda exaltada a cada instante.

Vacilando entre estratégias romanescas das estéticas romântica e realista, nos romances deJúlio Dinis aclaram-se as consciências colectivas para uma nova ordem social que rompa com abarreira dos preconceitos imposta à liberdade do pensamento e da acção humana, sempre nomáximo respeito pela identidade.

This PHD Thesis aims to clarify some aspects in the literary work of Portuguese writer Júlio Dinis as well as to make some analytic inflections not yet considered until today within the critic scope. Some narrative perspectives are critically observed within the Portuguese literature context, and the literary relationships established with some Portuguese writers are also reconsidered. From a comparative point of view, since the novels of Júlio Dinis establish an undeniable link to the English and Irish literature - the writer was the son of an English mother and the grandson of an English and an Irish -, and according to arising issues present in these novels, names as Laurence Sterne, Oliver Goldsmith, Henry Fielding, Jane Austen and Charles Dickens were included in this study.

The pioneering psychological treatment that Júlio Dinis gives to the individual and to society in the 19^thcentury Portuguese literature is deeply rooted in the English literary tradition since the 18th century. This becomes an effort to approach the different social classes through the individual relationships and, while striving for order and justice in a framework of moral values, it also becomes the outline of a social utopia. The influence of the English literary aesthetic in Dinis's work is obvious: painting is used as intersemiotic process to encourage self-esteem in the reader; the judicious perspective, either applied by the individual or the society, expresses an undesirable constraint only exceeded by the psychological metamorphosis; the worldview of the theatre in life, and of life in theatre, forces the individuals to an enduring effort to adjust the personal mask; the androgyny, applied to female characters, undoubtedly intends to give special attributes to women; body and home as the language of thought; social progress is always defended in the respect for the human rights, and the national identity is often claimed.

In Júlio Dinis novels, both the romantic and realistic aesthetic strategies appeal to the collective consciousness of a new social order that breaks the barrier of prejudices built against freedom of thought and action - always imposing the utmost respect for the personal identity.
