The British Broadcasting Corp. is famous for its TV productions.
What's not so well-known is that the BBC, or "Beeb," as it's affectionately called in the United Kingdom, cut its teeth on talk radio and still has several radio stations devoted to the spoken word, including book readings and dramatizations by professional actors.
It's now sharing these with the rest of the world via BBC 7, a digital radio network that broadcasts 24/7 over the Internet.
The station draws on the corporation's 50-year archives of programs. It's both free and commercial-free, and caters to a broad range of bookish listeners.
The schedule of programs changes daily. Recently its has included straightforward narrations of "David Copperfield" and "Breakfast at Tiffany's" as well as dramatic adaptations of all the adventures of Sherlock Holmes.
