Abstract

This study will highlight the lived experiences gay Asian men (GAM) have with traditional media (film/television), social media, and news media. The purpose of the study is to explore how representation (or lack of) on these media affects GAM. Specifically, it addresses the problem of the emasculation of GAM through negative stereotypes perpetuated by the media (e.g., being short, skinny, effeminate, submissive, passive, less sexually attractive, etc.). Multiple theories, including Intersectionality, Queer Theory, Asian Critical Theory, and Cultivation Theory will help guide the study. The qualitative interviews conducted use a phenomenological approach and will examine the perceptions of eight GAM and the challenges they have with the media. The data collected from the eight interviews will be used to help offer solutions to these various issues. Hopefully, this study will add valuable information to the limited literature on GAM and the media, and GAM in general.
