Abstract

This article offers an analytical study circumscribed to the verses and theoretical-conceptual notes dedicated by Lope de Vega to his friend and mentor Vicente Espinel. From this textual corpus it can be deduced how the playwright was forging an «Espinel brand» using literary and advertising strategies that he himself was implementing in his professional career. To do this, he focused his gaze on two supposed essential contributions attributed to Espinel: the strophic-gcneric channel of the tenth that Lope called «Espinela» and the incorporation of a fifth order to chordophone instruments such as the vihuela and the guitar with which the sonadas or room songs were accompanied. In this context, Lope also planned to place Espinel's name alongside that of other renowned musicians of the aesthetic height of his teacher Francisco Guerrero or the prestige of Juan de Palomares and Juan Blas de Castro, two friends very close to the Phoenix in the intersection of codes between poetry and music.
