In-line skates are king now, as evidenced by the many children, teens and adults you see riding the sidewalks in them all over town.
But years ago, the big roller sport was roller derby on regular old roller skates. One of the undisputed kings of that has been a Mount Prospect resident for many years.
He is Sammy Skobel, 72, a Chicago native who skated professionally on the roller derby circuit from 1945 to 1965 and was voted into the Roller Derby Hall of Fame back in 1951. Skobel accomplished all of this despite the fact that he lost 90 percent of his eyesight to scarlet fever when he was only 4 years old.
