CORRECTION/date 03-02-1999: A story in some editions misidentified Otis Schmidt. Schmidt founded the Schmidt Iron Works company, which is not affiliated with Otis Elevator.
A price will finally be placed on a piece of Northwest suburban history next month, possibly drawing bidders from around the country.
The draw is Schaumburg's 7,000-square-foot Kern-Schmidt mansion, the focal point of the upscale Lexington Fields Estates neighborhood in the shadows of the Woodfield corridor, southeast of Meacham and Higgins roads.
One of eight Schaumburg sites with landmark status, the white- frame mansion built in the 1930s is architecturally significant as an example of neoclassical style. Local historians believe architect Paul Schweikher, a protege of Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe, designed it when he lived in the village between 1934 and 1953.
