Alhambra Telling: A Study on the Epigraphy and Architecture of the Palace-City of the Nasrids

Abstract

The Alhambra Palace is the only surviving Islamic Palace completed before the fifteenth century. Its construction phases are unclear, nor is there any other still-standing coeval palace setting to which it could be compared. However, its epigraphical program supplies an alternative source of information. Scholars employ its inscriptions to provide insight into the functions of the places they are in, yet there is no consensus in the hypotheses put thus far. Unlike the previous studies, this thesis inquires whether interiors, courtyards, and inscriptions in the palace follow interrelated patterns. It attempts to portray an integrated and meaningful picture of the inscriptions and places of the Alhambra by associating architecture and inscriptions in the courtyards and their surrounding rooms. The concepts and metaphors with poetical and historical content in the epigraphical domain suggest probable pristine functions for Alhambra’s miscellaneous architectural spaces. This thesis aims to unearth new meanings in the Alhambra Palace-City and contribute to the field with new viewpoints and discussions.

Elhamra Sarayı, on beşinci yüzyıldan önce tamamlanarak günümüze ulaşan tek İslam sarayıdır. Yapım aşamaları belli olmadığı gibi, karşılaştırılabileceği çağdaşı bir saray da mevcut değildir. Ancak, epigrafik programı alternatif bir bilgi kaynağı sağlar. Mevcut literatürde, bugüne kadar ortaya atılan görüşlerde fikir birliği olmasa da araştırmacılar yazıtları bulundukları yerlerin işlevleri hakkında bir fikir vermek için kullanmışlardır. Bu tez, bugüne kadar yapılan çalışmalardan farklı olarak saraydaki iç mekanlar, avlular ve yazıtların birbirleriyle ilişkili kalıpları takip edip etmediğini sorgular. Tez, avlular ve etrafındaki odalarda yer alan kitabeler ile mimariyi ilişkilendirerek Elhamra’nın yazıtları ve mekanlarının bütünleşik ve anlamlı bir resmini çizmeye çalışır. Kitabeler alanındaki şairane ve tarih içerikli kavram ve metaforlar, Elhamra’nın çok yönlü mekanları için özgün olası işlevler önerir. Bu tez, Elhamra Saray-Şehrinde yeni anlam ve işlevler ortaya çıkartmayı ve alana yeni bakış açıları ve tartışmalarla katkıda bulunmayı hedefler.
