The Fiestas del Pilar in Zaragoza would not be thesame without the traditional cachirulo, an element that has become an indisputable symbol of the celebration, which this year is celebrated from October 3 to 13. This red and black checkered scarf is a fundamental part of the Aragonese identity and an essential garment in the festivities.
The origin of the cachirulo goes back to the Muslim period, when the Moors used square scarves to protect themselves from dust and to dry their sweat during their work in the fields. Over time, the scarf adopted more colorful colors and patterns, and was incorporated as part of the celebrations, becoming a symbol of the Pilar festivities.
