IT IS entirely fitting that the minute's silence with which Workington Town will remember one of their greatest players on Sunday will fall before a match against Featherstone Rovers, for it was against them in the Challenge Cup final in 1952 that Bill Ivison had his finest hour.
At Wembley that year, Ivison won the Lance Todd Trophy as man of the match as Workington beat Featherstone 18-10 to claim rugby league's oldest trophy less than seven years after their foundation. Ivison, the Town loose forward, has long been regarded as one of the most emphatic winners of that coveted award, after an outstanding performance in both attack and defence that included a marvellous run and pass to send the Australian Johnny Mudge away for the crucial try.
