Did you know that the Russian Leon Tolstoy, one of the most important writers in Western literature, had an extremely toxic relationship with his wife, Sofia? This is the central theme of the award-winning monologue "Só vendo como dói ser mulher do Tolstói" (Just seeing how it hurts to be Tolstoy's wife), which will be performed at the Adolpho Bloch Theater, in Glória, next Monday (28/10), at 8pm.
Written by Ivan Jaf and directed by Johayne Hildefonso, the show features actress Rose Abdallah in the role of Sofia Tolstói. The plot seeks to demystify the Tolstoy myth by exposing the machismo of the author of "War and Peace" and "Anna Karenina" and shedding light on female protagonism. For decades, Sofia wrote diaries that prove a patriarchal, macho and abusive relationship. Overshadowed by her husband's fame for two centuries, it is only now, with the women's empowerment movements, that Sofia's voice is beginning to be heard.
"When I read the monologue, it was a mixture of feelings: love for her and shock at knowing the other side of Tolstoy. Despite all his genius, he was an ordinary man, a Russian who faithfully followed the teachings of Domostroi, which in Russian means 'order in the house', 'if the husband doesn't tame the wife, the whole home...
