FedEx celebrated the grand opening Wednesday of its "Secondary 25" sorting facility at its World Hub at Memphis International Airport.
The new 1.3 million-square-foot facility can handle approximately 56,000 packages per hour and has the capacity to sort more than 484,000 packages daily, said Lisa Lisson, FedEx president of air operations. The facility began operations earlier this month.
“Modernizing the Memphis World Hub is a key step in our network transformation to help our customers compete and win with the world’s most flexible, efficient and smartest logistics network," Lisson said.
The new facility replaces some of the hub's older secondary facilities. The "secondary" term refers to the delivery process: Secondary essentially means sorting in this logistics sense.
