Although the Silver Jews have harboured a couple of Pavement people in the past few years, the songwriter behind their deceptively laid-back and melodious country tinged rock is David Berman (below). Every day he helps cultivate water melons in his five-acre garden, reads a book and keeps company with his beloved dog, Jackson. "We have great one-sided conversations," Berman explains. "He's been living with me over a year, and it's really weird, it just occurred to me that he has not said a single word."
