Abstract

Soberbia (Albert Lewin, 1942) es el primer biopic, si bien ficticio, sobre un artista contemporáneo. Basado en la novela de Somerset Maugham La luna y seis peniques(1919), cuenta la historia del pintor Charles Strickland, cuya vida y obra están inspiradas en Gauguin. El principal atractivo de la película es el retrato del creador como alguien excéntrico, cuyo genio se opone a las normas establecidas. Esta cuestión se refleja en los diversos elementos que componen el universo fílmico, siendo la música de Dimitri Tiomkin uno de los más importantes, debido a su capacidad para desentrañar las más profundas emociones del subconsciente. Su análisis aporta nuevos matices a los ya estudiados sobre esta producción, así como a las reflexiones sobre la visión de la figura del artista en el cine.

The main attraction of the film is the portrayal of the artist as someone eccentric, whose genius opposed the establishment. This issue is reflected in the various elements that make up the film universe. Dimitri Tiomkin’s music is one of the most important due to its ability to unravel the deepest emotions of the subconscious. Its analysis brings new nuances to those already studied on this production, as well as to the reflections on the vision of the artist figure in cinema.
