New Zealand's largest national park has finally been approved by Cabinet after more than 10 years in the making.
The new Kahurangi National Park protects 452,000ha of pristine north-west Nelson forest from the base of Farewell Spit to the Buller River in the south.
Conservation Minister Denis Marshall said the park was one of New Zealand's largest unbroken areas of virtually unmodified landscape. "It consists of extensive areas of native forest and limestone and marble landscape which has international significance," he said.
