Somes needs cash injection, says trust: [3 Edition]

Somes Island in Wellington Harbour has huge potential as an eco- tourism destination but first needs a big cash injection to clean up substandard facilities, says a charitable trust being launched on Friday.

Matiu/Somes Island Charitable Trust chairwoman Maureen Burgess said Wellingtonians had a particular affinity for the island and "there was a lot of feeling in the community that the island was locked away". The trust was concerned about the lack of resources being put into the island.

The Department of Conservation clearly had limited funds for its development, despite its huge potential, she said.
