ANOTHER Rat Deserts Wellington. It was an unpublished headline that got me into some trouble late last year with my masters.
But that headline on a business page article summed up growing sentiment within the Wellington business community that shifting to Auckland is no longer necessary for staying on top.
Since the early 1990s Wellingtonians have had to sit on the sidelines as medium-to-large firms headed north to Auckland or further afield - Bank Of New Zealand, Chubb, General Motors, Tranz Rail, Lotteries Commission, etc, etc.
While hotfooting it out of Wellington for greener pastures probably was hip in the early 90s, now it seems people are more reluctant to leave the city. It'll take more than the enticement of an extra $10,000 salary for people I know to ship out of the Capital.
