COUNCILS in Wellington and Hawke's Bay are considering using Chinese grass carp to get rid of weeds in waterways.
Applications for consent to introduce the fish to eat weeds have been made by Porirua City Council, Upper Hutt City Council and the Wellington Golf Club at Heretaunga. Hawke's Bay Regional Council is preparing an application.
The proposals have met opposition from individuals and groups, including the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society, which fear the effects the fish will have on the habitats they are released into.
