CONSERVATION Department staff fielding a stream of calls about sick penguins are advising people to let nature take its course, Wellington conservancy support manager Colin Miskelly says.
During the next month in the moulting season, penguins would come ashore in coastal areas in search of sheltered places to hide, typically under houses, in gardens, or nestled against retaining walls.
Moulting penguins had already been spotted in Taranaki, Wanganui, Manawatu and Wellington, he said.
They seemed unwell because they had lost weight, looked scruffy as old feathers...
