Entre amistad, historia y narración: afinidades electivas de Hannah Arendt con Walter Benjamin

Abstract

La íntima amistad que Hannah Arendt y Walter Benjamin compartieron es desconcertante y no se desvaneció en partidas de ajedrez o conversaciones. Al contrario, dejó huella en motivos importantes de la pensadora como su teoría de la acción. El propósito de este artículo es rastrear las silenciosas afinidades de Arendt con su amigo Benjamin. La tesis central es que ambos comparten una visión crítica de la modernidad correspondiente con sus filosofías de la historia. Benjamin mostró el carácter intrínsecamente político de la historia criticando la idea de progreso, mientras Arendt historiza la política con el acontecimiento y su remembranza.

The intimate friendship Hannah Arendt and Walter Benjamin shared is puzzling and did not fade away in chess games or conversations. On the contrary, it left its trace on important motifs of the thinker such as her theory of action. The purpose of this article is to trace Arendt’s silent affinities with her friend Benjamin. The central thesis is that both share a critical view of modernity corresponding with their philosophies of history. Benjamin showed the intrinsically political character of history by criticizing the idea of progress, while Arendt historicizes the political with the event and its remembrance.
