Ser madre en solitario: un retrato de las familias incompletas en la Castilla Moderna

Abstract

A lo largo de la Edad Moderna, en la sociedad occidental se impuso un modelo de género femenino en el que la mujer alcanzaba la plenitud a través de la maternidad matrimoniada. Partiendo de esa premisa, en este artículo nos proponemos conocer la experiencia vital de todas aquellas mujeres que, por desidia o ausencia de sus amantes, se vieron obligadas a afrontar la maternidad en solitario. Para ello nos hemos valido de documentación asistencial y criminal fechada a lo largo de los siglos XVI-XVIII que nos habla de estupros, violaciones, abortos, infanticidios, abandonos y adopciones. Una realidad en todo caso poliédrica a la que no se le ha prestado la atención suficiente por no responder al modelo ideal de familia: cristiana, ordenada y jerarquizada, en la que el hombre se ocupaba del sustento económico y la mujer de los cuidados.

Throughout the Modern Age, a female gender model was imposed in Western society in which women reached their full potential through married motherhood. Starting from this premise, in this article we propose to know the vital experience of all those women who, due to neglect or absence of their lovers, were forced to face motherhood alone. For this we have used assistance and criminal documentation dated throughout the 16th-18th centuries that tells us about rapes, abortions, infanticides, abandonments and adoptions. In any case, a multifaceted reality that has not received enough attention because it does not respond to the ideal family model: Christian, orderly and hierarchical, in which the man took care of the financial support and the woman the care.
