Introduction: In the initial teacher training, evaluation is considered as a transversal component in the entire training system, therefore, it is a topic that will always be present in the daily life of a future teacher. Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the social representations that the initial physical education training students of two universities in the city of Medellín have about evaluation. Methodology: This research had quantitative and qualitative elements. It included 366 undergraduate students in physical education. The quantitative data analysis was carried out with the Microsoft Excel 365 spreadsheet and the qualitative data was analyzed with the Atlas ti software version 9. Results: 393 words emerged that define evaluation and 19 words that make up the most hegemonic social representation. Two categories emerged: Assessment of learning and assessment for learning. Discussion: The results of this research are similar to those found in other studies where the most outstanding thing is the conception that the student has about assessment as a form of measurement of knowledge. Conclusions: It is concluded that there are multiple possibilities of representation about the concept of evaluation; however, it is found that the words knowledge, learning, qualification and process had a greater semantic weight. It is also revealed that the majority of students are inclined towards a social representation of assessment around the assessment of learning
