FORD will be exhibiting two concept cars at the Detroit Auto Show next week - the first represents the finished appearance of the new retro-styled Thunderbird slated for production this year. The Ford Thunderbird sports roadster (above left) is built on a Jaguar S-type chassis platform, with a 3.9-litre V8 engine under the bonnet driving the rear wheels. The other concept, the Forty-Nine, is designed to echo the chopped and channelled, "lead-sled" custom cars of the immediate postwar years, particularly the '49 Ford production car from which it takes its name. Among four concepts from great rival General Motors is the Buick Bengal (above right), a luxury roadster featuring a supercharged, 3.4-litre V6 engine and six-speed automatic gearbox.
