ON Tuesday, Alexander McQueen was crowned British fashion designer of the year for the third time.
Last night, he demonstrated the genius that has earned him this unprecedented accolade. His autumn/winter collection, entitled "What a Merry-Go-Round", was as striking as it was sinister.
McQueen turned his customary venue - an old bus depot in Victoria - into a macabre children's playground.
Models in fiercely-tailored patent leather and wool trouser suits, with fitted jackets and wide "bags", cavorted around a merry-go- round, the horses covered with patent leather "fetish" coats in lilac, black, violet and grey.
Front-row guests included the designer's new boss, Mr Domenico de Sole, chief executive of Gucci, which bought a 51 per cent stake in McQueen's company in December. He was accompanied...
