On February 25 2025, US President Donald Trump ordered a new tariff investigation into US copper imports, citing elevated risks to supply chain security given domestic overreliance on copper imports. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), in 2024, US net import reliance on copper as a percentage of apparent consumption amounted to 45%. The investigation is expected to cover all types of copper imports, such as raw mined copper, copper concentrates, refined copper, copper alloys, scrap copper and derivative products. This move follows a series of Trump's tariff threats, including an earlier imposition of a 10% tariff on Mainland Chinese imports, an announcement of a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico as well as 25% tariffs on steel and aluminium imports.
