The PhD thesis Pamyat’ i kul’turnaya identichnost’ v memuarnoy proze knyazya I. M. Dolgorukova is devoted to the study of the memoir prose of Prince I. M. Dolgorukov (1764–1823), a noteworthy figure in the Russian cultural scene of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The PhD thesis draws attention to this original author, who has remained on the periphery of scientific interest, and to his “forgotten” life-writing production. The analysis focuses on his voluminous autobiography entitled Povest’ o rozhdenii moyem proiskhozhdenii i vsej zhizni… The other ego-texts of the writer are used for comparisons and a correct interpretation of his autobiographical narrative. Through a multidisciplinary approach, the PhD thesis explores current issues such as cultural memory and cultural identity and answers to questions posed by autobiographical genres. Being one of the rare examples of male autobiography of the time, I. M. Dolgorukov’s autobiography allows to outline some features of male autobiographical discourses of the 18th and early 19th centuries. The research aims to reconstruct the prince’s complex cultural identity. Therefore, special attention is paid to the three main spheres of the author’s self-identification in the text, namely personal, professional and public life. The latter show the eclecticism of the writer and the influence of the cultural context on the life-writing of I. M. Dolgorukov, who uses the paradigms of sentimentalism and classicism at the same time.
