Father Georgios Tsibouktsakis, the acting superior of St. George's Monastery killed in a drive-by shooting on the Jerusalem- Ma'aleh Adumim highway Tuesday night, was laid to rest at the monastery yesterday.
The coffin, which arrived from the L. Greenberg Institute for Forensic Medicine at Abu Kabir accompanied by two police officers, was transported by tractor down the steep ravine separating the monastery from the Jerusalem- Jericho highway. Lay members of the Greek Orthodox community then carried it up the narrow path leading from the ravine into the monastery itself.
The monastery, built into the rocky cliff side in the 19th century atop Byzantine remains, offered a cool refuge from the heat outside, while the surrounding trees and gardens added a touch of color to an almost monochrome landscape. Mourners bearing...
