An 18-year-old female Palestinian suicide bomber, wearing a belt of explosives around her waist, walked into a supermarket in Jerusalem's Kiryat Hayovel neighborhood Friday afternoon and blew herself up, killing two Israelis and wounding 28 others.
The victims of the attack were identified as the security guard at the supermarket, Haim Smadar, 55, who police said thwarted an even greater disaster by preventing the bomber from going deep inside the store, and shopper Rachel Levy, 17, both from Jerusalem.
It was the second suicide bombing in the city in just over a week, and came three days after two Palestinian bombers were intercepted as they made their way to the Jerusalem Mall, and less than 48 hours after the Pessah massacre in Netanya that killed 22 people.
The Aksa Martyrs Brigade, a US-declared terror organization that is an arm of Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement, took responsibility for the attack and identified the bomber as Ayat Akhras from the Dehaishe refugee camp near Bethlehem.
