Abstract

In the countries of the European Union, a particularly transcendent social change is taking place, that of the cultural and ethnic diversification of society. This change, however, is not occurring in a peaceful manner, but rather generates situations of confrontation and rejection. Racist attitudes have been proliferating for years in countries such as Germany and France and are now also beginning to spread to Catalonia. Xenophobic attacks such as those that took place in Ca n'Anglada (Terrassa) on 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 July 1999, and in Banyoles and Girona a few days later, are an explicit example. Faced with this social change, two radically different attitudes can be adopted: that of considering culture as a dynamic phenomenon that is built day by day in the various social interactions; that is, that of understanding "interculturality" as a natural, enriching and positive fact; or that of considering culture as an abstract reality that embodies the "essential" identity of peoples and that serves as a point of reference to define the relevant traits that must be possessed in order to belong to a certain group or social community. This second perspective tends to interpret the presence of the Other as a danger that threatens one's own identity. Consequently, we believe that we can generalize that the social representation that is constructed of immigration depends, in large part, on the perspective that the dominant public discourse adopts and disseminates.
