This study investigates the teaching strategies that support the successful learning of English among adults who have participated in an intensive conversational language course in Puerto Rico. Through qualitative research using an action research design, the research explores effective teaching strategies that facilitate second language improvement in emergent bilingual adults in addition to their personal and their professors’ perspectives of improvement. Participants enrolled in the intensive English conversational course offered by the Division of Continuing Education and Professional Development at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras were young professional adults who worked in various branches of a financial institution based on the island. Data collection methods included diagnostic and posttest, direct observation, individual interviews, and focus groups, revealing categories such as methodological and affective teaching strategies. The conversational English course offered a chance for students to improve their performance of skills, such as listening comprehension, vocabulary use, and pronunciation, but most importantly, it was an excellent opportunity for students to improve their attitudes, confidence, and motivation toward learning and speaking English.
