MOST pornography does not need intricately realized psychology to move us. Fleshy friction takes over where character gives out and the two-dimensional dramatic nature of the arrangement becomes an integral part of the charade.
The American movie Lake Consequence falls rather inconsequentially between the slats of such a plainly outlined porn film and something more emotionally astute. It wants, in short, to be sexy while it is being wise, and the result is a frustrating film that boasts little more than the absence of both attributes.
Near the start of the movie, a trusting husband goes off to work, leaving his bored housewife alone in her bathrobe with her decolletage in precipitous view of the dark, sulking gardener whose pectorals and thorn-pricked hands she craves.
But Irene (Joan Severance) seems more bored than other bored housewives. From the first time we see her approaching climax, she seems to be fighting back some grand hostility of an unspecified, volcanic sort.
