Abstract

The OECD Learning Compass offers a forward-looking framework to help students navigate an increasingly complex and fast-changing world. It highlights the importance of student agency, well-being, and the development of key competencies for shaping both personal and collective futures. However, for students to truly benefit from this vision, teachers must also be empowered—with a strong sense of agency, professional competencies, and well-being—to effectively bring the Learning Compass to life in their classrooms. This moment presents a critical opportunity to reimagine the teaching profession. Rather than relying on traditional, top-down approaches, it calls for a shift toward empowering teachers as co-designers of learning, adaptive experts, and drivers of change. At the same time, it offers a chance to elevate the status, purpose, and meaning of teaching itself. Innovations such as collaborative professional learning networks, AI-powered tools, and increased autonomy in curriculum design provide new pathways for teachers to expand their influence and redefine their roles. When teachers are supported and trusted, they can lead meaningful change — not just respond to it. The OECD Teaching Compass plays a vital role here, acting as a practical guide to help teachers apply the Learning Compass in ways that foster deep, transformative learning.
