Abstract

Latin American Sociology in the 20th century went through a period of critical reflection on its condition. Orlando Fals Borda (1925-2008) contributed greatly to this process. This dissertation seeks to bring Fals Borda's reflections closer to the field of Regional Development. Therefore, this dissertation has the general objective of analyzing the contribution of Latin American Sociology in the 20th century to the construction of a sociological interpretation of regional development. The guiding questions of this research are three: 1) to what extent was sociological knowledge mobilized to understand and act on and in Latin American development? 2) in what way does “science itself” contribute to thinking about and transforming Latin American Sociology? 3) how relevant is Fals Borda's thinking for the field of regional development? Based on these questions, the specific objectives are outlined. They are: a) to describe the process of emergence and institutionalization of Latin American Sociology and its relationship with the issue of development; b) identify Orlando Fals Borda's contribution to Latin American Sociology; c) evaluate Fals Borda's contribution to the field of Regional Development. Lucien Goldmann's genetic structuralism is used as a theoretical-methodological framework. The results of the research were organized into three scientific articles. Fals Borda's work and his contribution to the field of Regional Development can configure an epistemic orientation directed towards social transformation and regional autonomy.
