Abstract

Male student-athletes face unique challenges in developing emotional intelligence due to stigma, lack of education, and limited peer support. This qualitative descriptive case study examined the reasons behind the absence of emotional intelligence education among male student-athletes and explored ways to support their emotional well-being. The findings emphasize the urgent need for early intervention and structured emotional intelligence education to improve both athletic performance and overall mental wellness. Key conclusions highlight the necessity of integrating emotional intelligence education into student-athlete development programs, addressing stigma surrounding emotional expression, and fostering supportive environments. The study underscores the importance of peer support, noting that while teammates and athletic staff play vital roles, competition and trust issues can hinder emotional openness. Additionally, the pressures of student-athlete identity contribute to the reluctance to seek emotional help. To combat these challenges, recommended strategies include implementing emotional intelligence seminars, training athletic staff to provide psychological support, and creating institutional policies that promote emotional well-being. Awareness campaigns, athlete testimonials, and structured support networks can help redefine emotional expression as a strength rather than a weakness. By prioritizing emotional intelligence education within intercollegiate athletics, programs can cultivate athletes who are not only successful in sports but also equipped to navigate life beyond competition.
