A Study on the Construction Techniques of Rum Churches in Bursa During the Ottoman Period (19th–20th Centuries)

Abstract

Effective heritage conservation can only done by a proper understanding of construction techniques, which offers key insights into historical methods and materials. Standard restoration methods often ignore the diverse techniques originally used, which can lead to failures in preservation. In this context, the construction techniques of 19th- and 20th-century Rum Orthodox churches built during the late Ottoman period are examined within the scope of this thesis. These structures face risks from improper restoration, constant exposure to environmental conditions, and earthquakes. The purpose of the thesis is firstly to increase the knowledge about the selected eight structures and the construction techniques produced by their period and region. The knowledge gained through the thesis is necessary in case the buildings are lost in the future. For the protection of the eight case studies and similar structures, this thesis will act as a valuable resource of architectural, historical, and, most importantly, technical and material knowledge, supporting a scientifically grounded and well-reasoned approach to conservation.

Kültürel mirasın etkili bir şekilde korunması, ancak tarihi yöntem ve malzemelere ilişkin önemli bilgiler sunan inşaat tekniklerinin doğru bir şekilde anlaşılmasıyla mümkündür. Standart restorasyon yöntemleri genellikle orijinal olarak kullanılan farklı teknikleri göz ardı etmekte ve bu da korumada başarısızlıklara yol açabilmektedir. Bu bağlamda, geç Osmanlı döneminde inşa edilen 19. ve 20. yüzyıl Rum Ortodoks kiliselerinin yapım teknikleri bu tez kapsamında incelenmiştir. Bu yapılar, yanlış restorasyon, sürekli çevresel koşullara maruz kalma ve deprem gibi risklerle karşı karşıyadır. Tezin amacı, öncelikle seçilen sekiz yapı ile dönemlerinin ve bölgelerinin ürettiği yapım teknikleri hakkında bilgi birikimini artırmaktır. Tez aracılığıyla edinilen bilgi, yapıların gelecekte kaybolması durumunda gereklidir. Bu tez, sekiz örnek yapının ve benzer yapıların korunması için mimari, tarihi ve en önemlisi teknik ve malzeme bilgisi açısından değerli bir kaynak oluşturacak, bilimsel temelli ve gerekçeli bir koruma yaklaşımını destekleyecektir.
