“Mártires del deber”. Pioneros del periodismo portugués en Estados Unidos Pioneiros do jornalismo português nos EUA

Abstract

El objetivo de este trabajo es identificar y destacar el trabajo de los inmigrantes que han hecho historia del periodismo portugués en Estados Unidos, una historia protagonizada por editores autodidactas que lograron cumplir su sueño americano. Para ello, se han revisado los periódicos existentes en los archivos para recopilar datos biográficos y profesionales de una selección de editores pioneros del periodismo portugués en Estados Unidos basada en una muestra representativa de carácter arquetípico. Entre las conclusiones, se demuestra cómo, en sus inicios, algunos editores eran tipógrafos que editaban humildes cabeceras, pero otros consiguieron desarrollar proyectos ambiciosos que sirvieron para crear una opinión pública con voz propia frente al discurso anglosajón dominante.

The aim of this paper is to identify and highlight the work of immigrants who have made the history of Portuguese journalism in the United States, a history of self-taught editors who managed to fulfil their American dream. To this end, existing newspaper archives have been reviewed to collect biographical and professional data on a selection of pioneering editors of Portuguese journalism in the United States based on a representative sample of archetypal character. Among the conclusions, it shows how, in their beginnings, some editors were typographers who edited humble newspapers, but others managed to develop ambitious projects that served to create a public opinion with its own voice in the face of the dominant Anglo-Saxon discourse.
