Fotoperiodismo en transición: la memoria de los procesos independentistas postsoviéticos en el World Press Photo (1989-1997)

Abstract

La caída de la Unión Soviética abrió múltiples procesos transicionales. Este estudio analiza sus representaciones a través del concurso World Press Photo entre 1989 y 1997, en un periodo que abarca el llamado “desfile de soberanías” y los acuerdos de Jasaviurt, que pusieron fin a la Primera Guerra de Chechenia. Utilizando la escala Self-Assessment Manikin como herramienta metodológica, examinamos el tono y la retórica visual en las fotografías premiadas. Concluimos la prevalencia de tropos y estéticas orientadas a la violencia, frente a otras representaciones posibles y más completas. Finalmente, pretendemos contribuir al debate sobre la responsabilidad del fotoperiodismo como archivo histórico, destacando la importancia de la visualidad en la construcción de la memoria colectiva.

The fall of the Soviet Union set in motion multiple transitional processes. This study analyzes their representations through the World Press Photo contest between 1989 and 1997, in a period that covers the so-called “parade of sovereignties” and the Jasaviurt agreements, which put an end to the First Chechen War. Using the Self-Assessment Manikin scale as a methodological tool, we examined the tone and visual rhetoric in the winning photographs. We concluded that violence-oriented tropes and aesthetics prevailed over other possible and more comprehensive representations. Finally, we aim to contribute to the debate on the responsibility of photojournalism as a historical archive, highlighting the importance of visuality in the construction of collective memory.
